Generating Solar Energy for Cuban Maternity Homes

These community-based homes provide round-the-clock medical care, meals and a stress-free environment for high-risk expectant mothers. It’s just what they need for their last months of pregnancy…amidst island-wide blackouts from fuel shortages that have upended family life and now endanger them and their unborn children. In fact, Cuba is seeing an alarming increase in infant mortality and maternal mortality, even as Washington tightens its sanctions with a full-blown blockade on vital oil supplies.

These maternity homes urgently need energy independence to keep the lights on and offer a resilient, sustainable solution for their future and that of their highly vulnerable guests.

That’s where we come in: with your help, MEDICC will donate a full set of solar panels to 15 maternity homes in working-class Havana neighborhoods and beyond.

And that’s just the beginning. This is not a one-time appeal: informed by nearly 30 years working with Cuban health professionals, MEDICC will keep generating contributions from people like you, who care about Cuba’s expectant mothers and their newborns. Together, we will turn the lights on for life.
